Garlic (Allium sativum) has been used as a medicine and health-promoter for 5,000 years. It was widely used in ancient Assyria, Egypt, India, Greece and China. In more recent times, at least 1,200 pharmacologic studies were done on garlic by 1997, as well as many hundreds of studies on the chemistry of garlic.

Research has shown that an extract of Garlic, called Allicin,  supports the human body’s attempt to fight disease-resistant germs and ever-new microbial diseases (SARS, flesh-eating Strepto-coccus, West Nile encephalitis virus, AIDS...) and has amazing broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc), long believed to have the ability to ward off flu as our moms have been telling us, might have potential clinical applications as a preventive and therapeutic agents for flu virus infection.

The study was led by Dr. Hiroshi Ochiai at the Department of Human Science, Faculty of Medicine, Toyama Medical and Pharmaceutical University, Japan.

In traditional Chinese medicine, ginger has been used as one ofthe principal herbs to treat a “cold” causing a functional decrease in the livingbody, or to improve blood stagnation and symptoms of acute respiratory infections suchas the common cold and influenza.

The influenza virus enters our body through the upper respiratory tract and encounters pulmonary phagocytic cells including alveolar macrophages. In many cases, macrophages are the first barrier of the defense system responding rapidly and creating an environment for a subsequent immune response. As part of the defense system, macrophages produce various cytokines such as IL-1, IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α.

In a previous report, TNF-α was identified as an anti-influenza cytokine and recent studies have indicated that this cytokine serves as the first line of defense againstinfluenza virus infection in the body.

Star Anise has been used in a tea as a remedy for rheumatism, and the seeds are sometimes chewed after meals to aid digestion. As a warm and moving herb, Ba Jiao is used to assist in relieving cold-stagnation in the middle jiao, according to TCM.

Shikimic acid, a primary feedstock used to create the anti-flu drug Tamiflu, is produced by most autotrophic organisms, but star anise is the industrial source. In 2005, there was a temporary shortage of star anise due to its use in making Tamiflu. Late in that year, a way was found of making shikimic acid artificially. Roche now derives some of the raw material it needs from fermenting E. coli bacteria. The 2009 swine flu outbreak led to another series of shortages as stocks of Tamiflu were built up around the world, sending prices soaring.^[1]

Star anise is grown in four provinces in China and harvested between March and May. Its also found in the south of New South Wales. The shikimic acid is extracted from the seeds in a ten-stage manufacturing process which takes a year. Swiss pharmaceutical manufacturer Roche uses vast amounts of Star Anise in making Tamiflu.
